Alex Patterson, a self-proclaimed failing musician moves to tiny little Hamilton, Texas where he meets his neighbor, 79-year-old Darlene Viriglio, an outspoken, Southern woman. Their friendship leads to many discussions, but one that never gets settled. Why would a young successful man like Alex give up a career in the big city and move to a small town? Darlene asks that same question during their many bull sessions, never believing Alex’s flimsy answers. Along the way, Darlene pens a simple letter (inspired by her conversations with Alex) for the local newspaper and to everyone’s surprise the article goes viral, turning Darlene into an international phenomenon. With Alex’s help, she writes a few inspirational follow up articles adding to her popularity. Still, being a simple Southern woman, Darlene is unaffected by her celebrity and continues her quest to find out the real reason Alex moved to Hamilton.
